There are two variants to this route, one being 100 miles and the other being 92 miles. The only difference between the two is that the 100 mile ride includes a climb to the top of Pilot
Mountain and the 92 mile ride does not. This route will take cyclists through downtown Mt. Airy past several establishments referenced on The Andy Griffith Show. After leaving Mt. Airy, riders will continue on to scenic Pilot Mountain. The route offers excellent views of the mountain.
Riders on the Tour de Mayberry will have the opportunity to cycle to the top of Pilot Mountain. This side trek features a ride to the upper parking lot at the top of the mountain. The average grade is 10%. This adds an additional 8 miles to the overall distance of this ride.
This route will travel a scenic route out of Mt. Airy to the Edwards-Franklin House. The house
was built in 1799 and was restored by the Surry County Historical Society in 1973. Take a tour
of the house and enjoy a snack. You return to Mt. Airy by an alternate route. This ride features some strenuous hills.
This route is ideal for riders wanting a short spin through the town of Mt. Airy. Visit the downtown area and the establishments synonymous with Mayberry including Snappy Lunch and Floyd’s Barbershop. Cyclists will pass the boyhood home of Andy Griffith, as well as the Andy & Opie “TV Land” Statue, before heading out for some scenic views of the Blue Ridge
Mountain Range. There is one rest stop about midway through this ride.
This course is ideal for those wanting a short loop through gently rolling and delightfully shaded uptown Mt. Airy. It is an out and back going through some of Mount Airy's more beautiful neighborhoods including historic North Main; beginning and ending in the parking
lot of Mountain Valley Hospice. Time recording is available for anyone wanting to compete. There is one rest stop about midway through this run.
Kid's Fun Run
You get to choose either 1 mile or ½ mile. Enjoy a safe, fun, organized quick run designed especially for the youngest of adventurers (ages 3-12).
This is a way to support Mountain Valley Hospice and the Tour de Mayberry even if you can't be with us for the big day. You may pick up your packet and t-shirt on Friday or Saturday, May 4th or 5th. Or we can mail to you - just include an additional $5 for postage with your registration.
We love everyone - from the die-hard cyclist taking on the 100 miler without rest-stops, the competitive runner that trains for months, the power walker taking it one step at a time, the team walkers that stroll through the route enjoying the scenery, to the youngest adventurers and yes even the snoozers! We thank each and everyone of you for all of your support!
